which continuing competence test?

Everyone will have to take the generic sections of the test  (Legislation, Health & Safety and Environmental Protection) plus the relevant Activity-Specific option.

Tests for holders of a CoTC achieved before 22 December 2008

For each CoTC you hold the Continuing Competence Test Options Table below shows the Activity-Specific option(s), which you need to book. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure all his/her competencies are selected correctly when taking the Test.

Tests for those who are 'deemed competent' and 'EA assessed'

The test will reflect the type of activity.  Consult the Environment Agency to determine the specific activity and then refer to the Option column of the table below. Tests for Metal Recycling Sites (MRS), End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV), Composting, Anaerobic Digestion and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) can be found at the bottom of the Table.

Examples of how to select the appropriate option(s)

The following examples illustrate how to use the table:

Question: I obtained a L4-A CoTC in 1996 and TMB4 CoTC in 1998; which tests do I sit?
Answer: You will need to sit a test which comprises the generic questions together with the following options, Hazardous landfill (for L4-A) and Non-hazardous treatment (for TMB4).

Question: I am deemed competent, without a CoTC, which test do I sit?
Answer: The Environment Agency will confirm what type of competence you will need to maintain. Once you have this information consult the table.

Question: I have a number of landfill CoTCs starting with an inert landfill CoTC and including 4LH gained in 2006, do I need to sit options covering all the landfill CoTCs that I have?
Answer: No, the hierarchy still exists so you only have to maintain your competence for 4LH (by registering for the Landfill Hazardous Waste option).

Question: I have T3-C and TSB4 CoTCs, which test do I take?
Answer: The competencies within both CoTCs can be maintained by selecting and registering for the Transfer Non-Hazardous Waste option.

Question: I have been assessed by the Environment Agency, other than for a 2-year new licence exemption, what test should I take?
Answer: The Environment Agency will confirm what type of competence you will need to maintain. Once you have this information consult the table.
